Disc Golf is a sport that is very similar to traditional golf. However, instead of using a club and ball, one uses discs and various motions or throws to reach the desired target in as little shots as possible. Disc Golf is said to have been around since the 1920's, although it wasn’t formalized as a sport until the 1970’s. What started out as players throwing frisbees at poles with marked target lines, developed into a more formal sport with narrower discs falling into baskets with chains to catch the disc. "Steady" Ed Headrick is considered the father of modern disc golf.

As of 2013, there are a total of 4,060 disc golf courses registered with the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) both in the US and abroad. There are almost 100,000 registered PDGA members, with some industry professionals claiming that there are 500,000 players worldwide.

"As an accessible, malleable form of outdoor recreation, its appeal can be explained by the sense of place elicited from direct engagement with the landscape and community derived from a culture of play."
